What is the difference between a freshwater and saltwater pearl?

Well, for one, freshwater pearls tend to be much less expensive than the saltwater variety; mainly because saltwater pearls are much harder to harvest. Freshwater pearls also tend to have less of a luster than do saltwater pearls.
