Pearl Jewelry

Pearl jewelry has been prized for centuries. The iridescent sheen of pearls makes them one of the most highly sought after materials for making fine jewelry. It is said that every young woman should own at least one string of pearls.

Pearl jewelry is made from a calcium carbonate growth that occurs inside the mantle of a mollusk. They are a relatively rare, naturally occurring deposit, which is why they are often very expensive to purchase. While smooth, round shapes are considered the ideal, they are also found in other shapes as well.

Pearl jewelry can be made from both freshwater and saltwater pearls. Saltwater pearls are usually the most expensive due to both their size and difficultly in harvesting. Freshwater pearls are typically much less expensive and normally smaller as well.
